Interesting Polling Data From Time Magazine

Posted: October 10, 2008 in Politics

“As economic conditions in America continue to worsen and the campaign rhetoric heats up, Barack Obama has maintained a six point lead over rival John McCain, 50% – 44%, among likely voters in the most recent national Time Magazine Poll, conducted October 3 – 6.” (more from Abt SRBI)

While Abt SRBI highlights some of the typical points most news agencies and campagins talk about, you have to actually dig in the PDF file to find out the other details.

F5. GENERALLY SPEAKING, DO YOU USUALLY THINK OF YOURSELF AS A REPUBLICAN, A DEMOCRAT, AN INDEPENDENT, OR SOMETHING ELSE?
F6. DO YOU LEAN MORE TOWARD THE REPUBLICAN PARTY OR MORE TOWARD THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY?

ALL RESPONDENTS
===========

REPUBLICAN/LEAN MORE 39%
TOWARD REPUBLICAN PARTY

DEMOCRAT/LEAN MORE 50%
TOWARD DEMOCRATIC PARTY

DON’T LEAN/INDEPENDENT/ 9%
SOMETHING ELSE

NO ANSWER/DON’T KNOW 2%

Again, what’s up with the oversampling?

    It would appear that, out of a random sample, 50% of the people were leaned towards Democrats. It’s not some evil plot. Is it so hard to believe that half the country considers themselves to be Democrats? After all, they do control Congress (indicating their popularity relative to Republicans).
