My Favorite Quote of Today

Posted: August 15, 2008 in Headlines

“They’re just trying to make it harder and harder to make a dollar,” he said. “I don’t sit out here all day. I stay until I get a cheeseburger and a couple of dollars so I can buy cigarettes.”

This is coming from a homeless person in Santa Monica who was recently quoted by the LA Times.

Now I like this quote because it clearly shows that after all the programs, marches and coddling, cities like Santa Monica just do not have the power to make folks want to do better for themselves.

The article talks about the latest tender push by the Santa Monica city council–no sitting for panhandlers.

The City Council voted unanimously last month to prohibit solicitation by anyone sitting on public chairs or benches on the Third Street Promenade and the so-called transit mall along two neighboring streets, Broadway and Santa Monica Boulevard. The ordinance, which must be approved on a second reading, expected next month, does not seek to ban panhandling or solicitation outright but rather to free up limited public seating.

Now if you ever been to Santa Monica, you are very familiar with the demographic: Very rich, White and liberal. On the other hand, if you threw a rock in the air from any point in the city, chances are you will hit a homeless person on the street. Yeah, it’s really that bad. The beach is pretty nice, but oftentimes they reek of piss and trash due largely to the homeless population. Everyone whispers just how bad it is, but somehow if you state the obvious and suggest a harsher stance against folks who flat out don’t want to better themselves (excluding the mentally-ill ones), you’ve become a meanie.

The so-called war against homelessness has turned into a very expensive game of musical chairs.

Beggars can’t be sitters on Santa Monica’s benches

Sounds like he’s worried about getting laid off.

  2. Well, at least he sets attainable goals ;->
