  1. DarkStar says:

Yeas ago Tom Joyner and Tavis Smiley did a good job of explaining radio advertising costs and how it ties into ratings. Tom Joyner’s advertising was booked for a year out but the stations down the line were having trouble getting the local businesses to pay rates in line with Joyner’s ratings during the morning drive. He specifically mentioned that he was beating Howard Stern in some markets when Stern was still doing regular radio.

The person shown is right that talk show hosts have to be “professional” and, IMNSHO, Jesse Lee Peterson is a prime example of a bad talk show host.

I do think that we have to keep in mind here is that unlike Stern, Joyner’s show targets a SPECIFIC group of consumers largely based on ethnicity. There is no doubt in my mind that Joyner did beat Stern in markets like Atlanta, Baltimore, etc., but again, look at the demographic of his audience.

I’m not dismissing Joyner and Smiley’s claims here, but I think that you do have to take both targeted markets and their buying habits into consideration. That alone is enough to create a significant mismatch. As each Black Buying Report continues to reflect a substancial increase, I think that we will see more advertisers coming our way.
