Meteorologist confronts the global warming hype

Posted: January 19, 2007 in Uncategorized

James Spann, a meteorologist for an ABC news affiliate is speaking out against a suggestion by a “climate expert” from The Weather Channel who is suggesting that meteorologist who do not submit to the global warming hype should have their license revoked. This is what she (Dr. Heidi Cullen) said:

If a meteorologist has an AMS Seal of Approval, which is used to confer legitimacy to TV meteorologists, then meteorologists have a responsibility to truly educate themselves on the science of global warming.

[…]

Meteorologists are among the few people trained in the sciences who are permitted regular access to our living rooms. And in that sense, they owe it to their audience to distinguish between solid, peer-reviewed science and junk political controversy. If a meteorologist can’t speak to the fundamental science of climate change, then maybe the AMS shouldn’t give them a Seal of Approval. (source)

James Spann responds with the following:

I have been in operational meteorology since 1978, and I know dozens and dozens of broadcast meteorologists all over the country. Our big job: look at a large volume of raw data and come up with a public weather forecast for the next seven days. I do not know of a single TV meteorologist who buys into the man-made global warming hype. I know there must be a few out there, but I can’t find them. Here are the basic facts you need to know:

*Billions of dollars of grant money is flowing into the pockets of those on the man-made global warming bandwagon. No man-made global warming, the money dries up. This is big money, make no mistake about it. Always follow the money trail and it tells a story. Even the lady at “The Weather Channel” probably gets paid good money for a prime time show on climate change. No man-made global warming, no show, and no salary. Nothing wrong with making money at all, but when money becomes the motivation for a scientific conclusion, then we have a problem. For many, global warming is a big cash grab.

*The climate of this planet has been changing since God put the planet here. It will always change, and the warming in the last 10 years is not much difference than the warming we saw in the 1930s and other decades. And, lets not forget we are at the end of the ice age in which ice covered most of North America and Northern Europe. (source)

As you may have figured out from the title of this post, I am no fan of all the hype surrounding “global warming”. Like Spann mentions in his comments, the weather patterns of the earth have been changing for many years.

So as you can see, tolerance IS practiced in the world of science: Tolarate our view or shut up! Here is another example of the “open-mindedness” from scientists who preach the global warming doctrine:

(calsun.canoe.ca) Dr Chris de Freitas, who describes himself as a climate “agnostic”, has been attacked in a US Senate committee hearing for letting the study appear in the journal Climate Research, where he is one of the editors.

The journal’s editor-in-chief, Dr Hans von Storch, resigned in protest last week when the journal’s publisher, Otto Kinne, refused to let him run an editorial saying that publication of the study was a mistake. Two other editors also resigned.

Okay, hold up. A scientist (based on his own studies) has concluded that the global warming claim has no merit, so he shares his findings with the scientific community. As a result, some of the editors of this publication resign because they disagree with his findings. Continue reading that article here and you will see how he is being sidelined for not going with the status quo. Something else Dr. de Freitas mentions in another article that I found very interesting:

“Recently, media and politicians have virtually stopped talking about global warming and are now referring to climate change instead,” states de Freitas. “That’s because predictions of doom and gloom from warming just aren’t coming true. But with ‘climate change,’ Kyoto advocates can now cite any change or phenomenon as proof that CO2 emissions have upset the global apple cart.” (source)

They are playing you for a fool!

Don’t believe it? Do a search under “climate change” in Google news. The terminology is changing to cover bad calculations like the claim that hurricane Katrina was to be the first of many hurricanes to hit the Gulf region.

Ooops! Read here.

This is one of those issues that I can spend days debating because I feel it is one of those wacky claims that can (and has) get out of hand to the point where you and I are paying to promote it. Contrary to popular belief, not all the scientific community is sold on this claim.

Read, my people, READ!!!

Well the comment about following the money cuts both ways. The meteorologists work for companies that make money on advertising. They might not want to broadcast things that could upset their advertisers.

Although there have been climate changes in the past there is the question of how fast they occurred. If changes are currently happening on the planet in ten years which the natural climatological records show may have occurred over a 1000 years in the past and these meteorologists are portraying it as hype then they are full of crap.
